Greetings! My name is Brooks, and I am an audio engineer and musician based in Chicago, Illinois. I’ve been playing guitar/bass/electronics in bands since I was a child, and have been engineering studio recordings/concert sound professionally for about 6 years now.
I moved to Chicago 3 years ago to intern at Steve Albini’s Electrical Audio and quickly found myself running sessions there after my internship was over. Since then, I’ve been working out of studios such as Electrical Audio, Jamdek, The Shire of Frodo, and Palisade Studios. A little over a year ago, I helped open West Town Magnetics in the Humboldt Park neighborhood. The goal with our new studio co-op is to provide world-class studio technologies for independent artists/bands on a budget. More recently, I completed an apprenticeship at the Chicago Mastering Service, and have been mastering records at West Town Magnetics since then. You can also find me running sound at a few clubs around town, and performance venues around the states.
If I had to describe my engineering style, I would say that I have a knack for precise documentation of a band. I can also read when it is time for “producing” or stylizing the music with more experimental techniques. I learned how to record and mix on analog tape, mixing consoles, effects devices and like keeping it in the analog domain when possible. I also really enjoy the hybridization of analog equipment and digital editing techniques, and taking on projects that were started in other spaces or home setups. Would love to hear about where you see your project going and how I could supplement the tunes. Please reach out with any thoughts or questions!
